Being a new parent is a wonderful experience, but it can also be tough to keep a strong connection with your partner during this time. As a busy mom of 5, I know just how hard it is to balance breastfeeding and a relationship. Many times, I just felt “touched out”, after breastfeeding all day long, physically being there for my older kids, then being expected to spend quality time with my husband. But, finding time for your partner while breastfeeding is so important. Studies have shown that mothers who have supportive partners tend to breastfeed for longer and have more successful breastfeeding journeys.

Here are a few tips to help you find a balance between breastfeeding and nurturing your relationship:

1. Schedule Quality Time

Set aside dedicated time each day or week for you and your partner to spend together. It can be as simple as having a meal together, watching a movie, or engaging in a shared hobby. This will strengthen your bond and create opportunities for connection.

2. Communicate Openly

Talk to your partner about your needs and concerns. Share the challenges you face while breastfeeding and express the importance of maintaining your relationship. By communicating openly, you can work together to find solutions and support each other.

3. Involve Your Partner

Encourage your partner to be actively involved in your breastfeeding journey. They can assist with burping, diaper changes, or other tasks, allowing you to have more time for yourselves. This can also help them feel more connected to your baby and strengthens your partnership.

4. Seek Support

Reach out to family, friends, or a support group for help with breastfeeding. Having a strong support system can get rid of some of the pressure and give you more time to focus on your relationship.

5. Prioritize Self-Care

Taking care of yourself is essential for maintaining a healthy relationship. Make self-care a priority by finding time for relaxation, exercise, or pursuing your own interests. When you feel balanced and rejuvenated, you’ll have more to give to your partner and your baby.

Finding time for your partner while breastfeeding is a journey that requires patience and understanding. By implementing these tips and being proactive, you can create a peaceful and happy environment where both your baby’s needs and your relationship can thrive. Balancing breastfeeding and your relationship isn’t always easy, but it is so worth it.
